LCCC‘s Adult Services division hosted a “Real Talk” career workshop last week that asked the million dollar question: “What’s standing in your way?”
Attendees learned how things such as: a poor or lazy attitude, a messy social media presence, the company they may keep, or not being prepared could be holding them back from landing that dream job.
“If you are the smartest person in your circle then you need a new circle,” said Rawleigh Richardson, Director of Volunteer Engagement of Louisville Society for Human Resource Management (LSHRM), who was one of the presenters of the workshop.
Entrepreneur and business consultant, Demetria Gilkey, conducted a workshop activity during which she asked attendees to “Google” themselves. “It’s important to watch what you post on your social media accounts because prospective employers often “Google” employees and take into account of what’s on their profile”, Gilkey said.
Rawleigh jumped in and broke down the formality of the popular social media sites. “On Facebook your friends list should be people you would have dinner with, LinkedIn in is a little more formal, so it would be people you wouldn’t mind having coffee with”, he said.
Please stay tuned for future career services workshops and events at LCCC.
